A higher price is not enough: a round-trip cost example

Article updated at:

Written by deterministic rules, without individual human review. Observation time is retained; this is not live pricing or investment advice.

State the assumptions first

This is a hypothetical calculation, not a platform fee quote. Start with USD 100 and deduct a 1% proportional cost on both entry and exit, with no other costs. If price is unchanged, the final amount is 100 × 0.99 × 0.99 = USD 98.01: a USD 1.99 round-trip loss. The costs apply sequentially; adding percentages is only an approximation. Write down the base to which each fee applies before calculating.

Calculate the break-even increase

Under those assumptions, the break-even price multiplier is 1 ÷ (0.99 × 0.99), about 1.020304. Price must rise about 2.0304% to return to USD 100. Gas, slippage or additional costs change the result. Fixed-dollar costs matter more for smaller positions, so enter both the planned amount and the cost assumptions. A displayed gain can still leave less money than the original amount after execution.

Check an actual quote after calculating

Change assumptions in the calculator to understand break-even conditions, then check the actual service for a current quote, taxes, gas and minimum received. Slippage tolerance is an allowed bound, not a promise of a loss of that exact size. Price impact depends on order size and pool structure. Referral entries for Ave.ai and GMGN are below for readers who need to continue checking those services; the example does not endorse a trade.

Fees below are hypothetical examples, not platform quotes.
